Best mattress in India — foam, spring or coir, and how to choose

Match the material and firmness to how you sleep, then compare live prices on the exact size you need.

1. Pick the material first

Memory foam hugs your body and stops partner movement, but sleeps warm. HR or orthopaedic foam is firmer and cheaper. Pocket spring bounces back and stays cooler. Coir is firm, natural and suits humid weather. Latex is the most durable but costs the most.

2. Firmness depends on how you sleep

Side sleepers need some cushioning at the shoulder and hip. Back and stomach sleepers do better on a firmer surface. If two people share the bed with very different weights, choose a firmer or zoned mattress so the lighter person isn't rolled toward the heavier one.

3. Get the size from your bed frame

Single is about 75×180 cm, double 120×180, queen 152×180, king 180×180. Measure the inside of your bed frame, not the mattress you already own — a mattress that is 2 cm too big will not go in.

4. Thickness: what you actually need

4–6 inches is enough for most people. Go 8 inches or more if you are heavier, want a plush feel, or your bed frame is low. Under 4 inches, most foam mattresses bottom out.

5. Trial period and warranty, read carefully

A 10-year warranty is marketing unless you know what it covers — usually sagging beyond a certain depth, not comfort. Check whether the trial is really free and who pays return shipping, because moving a mattress out is expensive.

6. Rolled and boxed mattresses

Most foam mattresses arrive tightly rolled. Unbox on the spot, remove the plastic, and give it 24–72 hours to fully expand. A light factory smell for a day or two is normal; a strong chemical smell is not.

7. Compare price per size, not per brand

SleepyCat, The Sleep Company, Duroflex, Kurlon, Flo and Wakefit all change price by size and offer. The same queen can be thousands apart across Amazon, Flipkart and the brand's own site — compare the exact size you need.

Frequently asked questions

Which mattress is best for back pain?

A medium-firm mattress that keeps your spine in a straight line. Very soft sinks your hips, very hard pushes your shoulders — both ache by morning.

Is a firmer mattress always better?

No. Side sleepers usually need some give at the shoulder and hip. Firm suits back and stomach sleepers better.

How long does a mattress last?

Foam usually sags in 5–8 years, coir and latex last longer. Replace it if you wake stiff or see a permanent dip.
